Quonset WHAT?

So in the middle of the day today, I read a brief on Kansas.com saying a fugitive was found sleeping in a Quonset Hut.

I kept scanning the story, certain that it would tell me what the funk a Quonset Hut was. It didn't, so I asked (out loud) the obvious question. "What the funk is a Quonset Hut?"

Lori and Chris acted like I was the most illiterate moron on earth. To me, the object in this picture is a metal shed. I have never IN MY LIFE heard the term Quonset Hut before today.

This bugged me, so I polled the entire newsroom and here's what I discovered: No one under the age of 40 had ever heard the term Quonset Hut. Everyone over 40 knew exactly what it was.

Weigh on on this debate, please. And don't forget to claim an age group.

I read the brief yesterday and wondered the same thing. I had never heard of it either. Well Eagle motto...Now you know.

I'm 30 (not 23, denise!) and I've heard of it, but only because I've heard my dad use the term.

Never heard of it. Old people are funny.

I'd much rather be funny than poorly educated. Jeez, people, turn off that reality TV and crack a book occasionally. (And have a dictionary nearby. Apparently, you'll need it!)

Ooops. Forgot to add a couple more cutting comments:
Ever wonder what those triangular-shaped structures are in Egypt? Those are called PYRAMIDS. Say it slowly. Py-ra-mids.
And that five-sided building in Washington where the military is based? Pentagon. Pent-a-gon.
Pace yourself. There's a big 'ol world out there to learn about.

I had no idea what one was either, but then, I'm from New Jersey.

I knew what it was and I'm under 40 (a year and a half). Not something I talk about in general daily conversation, but yes, I have the knowledge.

Is that a picture of a miniature hut? It looks funny. I first heard the term from Ted Woodward who turned 40 last month.

Wow, Lori, these levels of rage and had to have been building in you since the Korean war era!

Lori said...

Hmmm, I was minus 4 years old when the Korean War ENDED, but I wouldn't expect you to know that, given the mountain of evidence building about the depth of your pre-Hanson intellect. Stick to those things on which you are well-versed, like who's being kicked out of the "Big Brother" house this week!

This is gettin' funny. C'mon Denise! Don't let her get away with saying something like that. C'mon!

Denise said...

Oh, this is so sad. She thinks she was -4 when the Korean War ended. Well, this is awkward. But you know what they say, the memory is the first to go. LAL, don't you give in to dementia without a fight, ya hear?

Have no clue to what a Quonset Hut is (age 32)

Denise, I've never heard of it either. And I used to read all the time! (I'm now 33) This is kind of like that "Wichita used to be called doo-dah back in the day thing". Lori—you know about that?

I knew, but only because of a similar newsroom moment. And I'm 33.
