The taste of childhood

Earlier today, I ate a strawberry Mike N' Ike's, and it got me to thinking about some of the flavors that I remember most from my childhood. Those hard strawberry candies with the strawberry goo in the middle are definitely among them.

I thought of a few others, too, including Fudge Stripe cookies, Fruit Stripe gum and Little Debbie's Nutty Bars.

Okay, so it's not exactly health food, but whenever I taste one of these things, I'm transported back to 1810 Thompson, Dodge City, 1980 something.

I'm thinking about doing a column on this topic and could use some feedback. What are some of the foods whose flavors take you back to childhood?

They need not be cavity creators, either.

Denise, Linda J. from the Eagle. Found your blog through Chris S. I'm dating myself here, but Black Cows take me back to my youth. You're probably too young to even remember them!

What a great topic! Brian and I took a stroll down memory lane and came up with this list: Big League Chew, Bubble Tape, Bit-O-Honey, Nerds, Atomic Fireballs, Warheads and Whistle Pops (Remember how you could make it sing before you ate it?!)

And what '80s Material Girl was ready to hit the town without her ring pop and candy lipstick? Takes me back to 213 S. Bone Dr., Normal, Ill., circa 1988.

Fun Dip. Although, I hear it's not just for kids anymore. Carter's friend Big Dan likes to mix it with vodka for an adult beverage.

We were too poor to afford candy. But thanks for resurrecting the memory!

Now or Laters. Whenever I eat one I think about summer vacation 1986, Anaheim, Calif. Good times.

I once ordered candy online for my mom. Her favorite growing up was Yabba-Zabba (sp?). I got it for her for Christmas. Must not be as good as it used to be. It's still in her freezer (7 years later).

Chick-O-Sticks take me back to the swimming pool in Ellinwood. Yum. And those awful peanut butter chews (in the orange and black wrappers) that people would hand out at Halloween. Blech! Not all memories are of the pleasant variety apparently.

I liked Mary Janes and squirrel nut zippers (they were little caramel candies). My brother and I also liked Sugar Daddies.

Good idea. For me it is Sixlets. Those candy covered little bits of chocolate! Love how they crunch - Yum! Never was a big candy eater but a "sleeve" of sixlets still makes me super happy!

Super Bubble bubble gum. It's what my grandpa gave out at his barbershop - to kid customers who got haircuts, and grandkids who swept up the hair.

I'll also vote for Big League Chew.

Strawberry Twizzlers. Still addicted. Pixy Stix were big as a kid. We tried to emulate our favorite pro athletes and rock stars by pretending it was cocaine. Did I just admit that? Boy, it sure burned the nasal cavity.

Hey now, Chris, I happen to LOVE those chewy peanut butter candies in the orange and black wrappers. What can I say? I'm a cheap date, and it started early.

A few tastes that take me back:

**Now and Laters (although, like Heather, I called them Now or Laters... or actually, Now 'er Laters)
**Slim Jims
**Bazooka bubble gum
**Mambas (sooo much better than Starburst!)
**Jolly Ranchers
**Charleston Chew
**Cheerwine
**Little Debbie snack cakes of any sort

Jeez, can you tell I grew up in the South, or what?!
